Bad Flash

Flashing your computer’s AWARD, AMI or Phoenix BIOS can sometimes go wrong and your computer will turn into a useless clipboard. You will see a disclaimer on each vendor’s bio download site. We are here to show you the correct precautions and actions in the event of a disaster.

Start by downloading a fresh copy of the BIOS vendor’s zip file. Store it in the root directory of your thumbdrive to make sure you do not lose it:

After that, you need to find and download a copy of DOS UBU (Universal BIOS Utility). It is also available from many sources on the net, but we will provide you with one direct link. It must be placed on the same drive as your newly downloaded BIOS archive.

Now go to device manager and click on “View devices by type” so we can see our UEFI/BIOS controllers. Most systems have two, sometimes three including one “Microsoft Windows ME Driver-based SCSI host controller”:

Right click and uninstall all instances of “Microsoft Windows ME Driver-based SCSI host controller” as well as your network card. This will prevent potential issues with the flash tool not being able to find enough free space on your drive:

After removing all of those, reboot into BIOS by pressing F2 or Del and make sure USB boot is set to enabled:

Now you are ready to start the flashing process. Assuming you have UBU and your new BIOS zip file in the root directory of your thumbdrive, open a command prompt (start->run->cmd) and type this command followed by enter – it is case sensitive!:

ubuflash –clean –efi biosname.rom

Make sure that both biosname.rom and ubu.efi are in the root directory of your thumbdrive! Also make sure to check if your biosname is AMI or Phoenix first, otherwise you might brick your board. If it is UBU then proceed:

When you see “Ready to program”, unplug all USB peripheral devices from your computer and insert a paper clip into reset hole (resetting BIOS):

Press enter and wait for success message. Do not remove paperclip from reset hole until you get the following prompt:

Once again press enter and plug back in one usb device at a time until Windows detects them – this way we will know that our flash process was successful without any unexpected errors. Lastly, reboot system and change boot sequence so USB is once again set to top priority:

UBU is a BIOS flashing utility from the UBU project. It is meant to replace various tools used for modifying/flashing BIOS, such as AMI-FLASH. To put it simply – you can use UBU instead of AMI-FLASH (or other similar tools). You can find full documentation on how to use UBU here . The only thing related to this article that we recommend reading in advance is “quick start guide” – section 3. Downloading and installation instructions are available at official site: http://code.google.com/p/ubu-bios/downloads/list If you need any additional help with using UBU then please consult the official documentation or ask for help here.
