How To Uninstall Existing Antivirus Software – Support

Why would you want to uninstall the existing Avast antivirus software?

If you’re switching to another antivirus company, then it is best practice to uninstall your existing one. The old adage “out with the old and in with the new” is always kind of applicable when it comes to technology. Some users will simply do an uninstallation of their current antivirus program and install their new preferred choice, trusting that they won’t get infected right away because they have a running anti-virus. If only it were so simple as trust! In reality, there are viruses out there that can cause serious havoc on your system if not run inside a proper virtual machine or sandbox, which is why I recommend keeping your old antivirus program installed and just add your new antivirus software to it. Since Avast has its own sandbox, we’ll be leaving the old one running while we install the new one on top of it.

For ease of use and simplicity, I recommend creating a restore point before you begin uninstalling anything so that if something doesn’t go according to plan you can always revert back and start over again.

Start by opening up your Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall or change a program (for Windows 8 users, simply search for ‘uninstall’ in the charms bar). Next, uninstall all previously existing Avast products from here, such as Internet Security (make sure to also remove the Avast Secure Browser) and Pro Antivirus.

With your Avast products uninstalled, it’s now time to run the installer for your new Avast antivirus software of choice! Once installed, you’ll notice that it will ask you to update the program. Go ahead and allow this but don’t restart just yet.

Now, go back into your Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall or change a program (for Windows 8 users, simply search for ‘uninstall’ in the charms bar). Here is where we’ll be configuring Avast Antivirus with all its features by running inside our old sandbox. This includes file, web and mail shields as well as firewall protection! Just make sure not to forget any of these specific ones! You can also uninstall any leftover Avast products that were left behind.

Some anti-virus applications can be written more than once in different programs. Before restarting the electronics or installing additional antivirus software, make sure that you have removed all components of the computer virus.sa.
